Hi, The zip file I am using is jboss-4.2.3.GA.zip. However, I was just informed by support for the vendor whose application depends on JBOSS that I must run version 4.0.5. So I will download the jboss-4.0.5.GA.zip file. Will that work OK with the JDK 1.5.0_17 that I currently have? I suspect this will not make a difference in my problem. I do agree that it must be something like what you suspect. Something with my SUSE setup or configuration maybe. Why didn't I think of this before? There are two birnary downloads for 4.2.3 - one is for JDK 5 the other for JDK6. I think you have the one for JDK6 (check the name of the zip file, does it have 'jdk6' in the name?) Are you using the right one? Based on code changes in TCLFilter, it looks like they changed how it decides if the even should be logged. Now, if acceptOnMatch is true and the TCL does not match, it returns NEUTRAL result instead of a deny RESULT. NEUTRAL means that this filter could not decide one way or the other and the next filter in line should check. According to AppenderSkeleton (in log4j), if there are no other filters returning a NEUTRAL result is the same as returning ACCEPT. So yes, it looks like someone broke(?) the code, probably in an effort to fix a bug that someone else issued that said that they could not chain filters. There is a org.apache.log4j.varia.DenyAll filter. You could try adding that to the filter chain. (Now I get it, the last filter in the chain should always be a DenyAll, this way is any of the other filters do not specifically ACCEPT the event, the last filter denies it.) This would require that you be able to set two connection URLs for a single datasource, and mark one to be used for reads and the other for updates. Such a thing is not possible at this time. The only option is to define two different data sources, configuring one to open the database in read-only mode if the database supports such a thing, and have your code select the data source it wants based on its needs. I suspect that the properties file is being read from the tmp directory because that is where the WAR file is exploded into. To get the results you are looking for, you could deploy the WAR as an exploded directory. Then the file would be located at server/xxx/deploy/xxx.war/vpweb.properties. The customer could then update the file as needed (without having to rebuild the WAR file). But one more step is required - The ConfigRegistry class, which I assume is a helper class for reading the properties file, will have to periodically check to see if the properties file was updated. JBoss AS does a similar thing to notice if someone changes the jboss-log4j.xml file - you could use that code as an example. Right now the properties file is located in the root directory of the war file. the war file is exported from eclipse. To retrieve a value I use the code: if ("true".equals(ConfigRegistry.getProperty("vpweb", "security.validate.bks"))) in the properties file (vpweb.properties): security.validate.bks=true I use the default server instance. It doesn't matter if I export a new war and put it in the deploy directory or if I change the war file on the spot. When the server is restarted it creates a work and a tmp directory which I have deleted to try to force a deploy of the entire war file. The best thing would be if the property could be modified by just modifying the properties file and maybe republish the app. The customer wants to change the properties himself so it should be as easy as possible.
