"jboss community 5.0" is better with Java 6... see the release note and readme files in the root folder of the download. - check if Eclipse is starting the server with a different JVM, and how - check if the credential are obtained by network call and that eclipse allow the connection (proper host, proper port access) another way is to start the server on it's own, and then ask the debugger to plug into it. I guess you have added the portal-mysql5-ds.xml file, to declare the datasource configuration with mysql, but did not deleted the one that was yet there, for hsqldb ? well anyway : the trouble seems to be there are two files that declare the "PortalDS" data source in the deploy folder. if you want to keep some "xxx-ds.xml" saved files (saving some configurations trials), then move them in another folder : such as /server/default/deploy_saved_files ******************* also you have this exception in your log file : 2010-07-21 13:49:24,256 ERROR [org.jboss.deployment.MainDeployer] Could not start deployment: file:/home/Namrata/Download/Dump/jboss-portal-2.7.2/server/default/deploy/jboss-portal.sar/portal-wsrp.sar/portal-wsrp.war/ org.jboss.ws.metadata.wsdl.WSDLException: javax.wsdl.WSDLException: WSDLException: faultCode=OTHER_ERROR: Cannot extract schema definition: java.net.UnknownHostException: www.w3.org at org.jboss.ws.tools.wsdl.WSDLDefinitionsFactory.parse(WSDLDefinitionsFactory.java:154) at org.jboss.ws.metadata.umdm.ServiceMetaData.getWsdlDefinitions(ServiceMetaData.java:295) at org.jboss.ws.metadata.builder.jaxrpc.JAXRPCServerMetaDataBuilder.buildMetaData(JAXRPCServerMetaDataBuilder.java:97) at org.jboss.wsf.stack.jbws.UnifiedMetaDataDeploymentAspect.create(UnifiedMetaDataDeploymentAspect.java:56) this is because the portal-wsrp.sar module needs some access to the net, and you might not have it (or have it properly configure for the WSRP feature). you can remove the portal-wsrp.sar folder from your "default/deploy/jboss-portal.sar" folder. this won't make any trouble. you only won't have the WSRP feature... but that is for Remote Portlet Service, that is Portlet that are running on another server... and not necessary to have the default portal working.... hope my guess about the datasource config is proper... and it helps you start... [JBoss Messaging] - JBoss 5.1 Messaging is not backward compatible

Messaging Client 5.1 and Messaging Server 4.2.3 Result: failed with java.io.InvalidClassException: org.jboss.jms.client.delegate.DelegateSupport; local class incompatible: stream classdesc serialVersionUID = 8005108339439737469, local class serialVersionUID = -1362079381836473747 1. Messaging Client 1.0.1 SP4 and Messaging 5.1 Result: failed with java.io.InvalidClassException: org.jboss.jms.client.delegate.DelegateSupport; local class incompatible: stream classdesc serialVersionUID … Looks like Messaging libraries that comes by default with JBoss 5.1 is not backward compatible. [Datasource Configuration] - JNDI and Data Source Configuration
