Thanks for all the help. 1. downloaded the mysql-connector-java-5.0.4-bin.jar from MySQL connector tar file and copied into 'server/standalone-messaging/lib' 2. Edited the mysql-ds.xml file to update the JNDI name 3. updated the mysql-persistence-service.xml file with above JNDI name as mentioned in the documentation . 4. brought the server up and it now talks to the MySQL DB.
