I have the same problem:
Running JBoss 4.0.3 with Java 1.4.3 gives me the same exception!
Running JBoss 4.0.3 with Java 1.5 works!
--> without any change!
I have to run with Java 1.4.4 - ANY HELP WELCOME !!
