AJAX and Portals in general is a bit of a tricky issue. I looked on the DWR site and found that they had an example web application that showed basic use of DWR at http://getahead.org/dwr/getstarted. You should be able to take this sample application, and place a portlet definition and some classes into it to have it use DWR.
