Platform wise theres a complete mix, but I think most of us use JBoss AS on a day-to-day basis. Thats not to say it doesn't work on Tomcat (I just never use Tomcat). Chapters 1 and 2 of the reference manual should give you a good intro to Seam and to starting a project (Seam-gen really is the way to go) It may be the case you need Tomcat 5.5...
