It probably is a MySQL "bug". Downgrading to Connector/J 3.0.17 solves the problem. Actually the same 'connection closed' errors occur with Hibernate for specific transactions. Version 2 did not had any problems, then in the early versions of 3.0 we had these problems until it was fixed in (about) 3.0.9. The newer releases 3.1 and 5.0 of Connector/J again have these 'connection closed' exceptions. So far not a big deal. 3.0.17 works fine, i guess that hould be the default lib for jbdc.
