The reason I asked for the info I did was because I have seen this issue before on Linux (as pointed out by the posts mentioned by jaikiran). Unfortunately, as you saw in those posts, there was no known solution. Did the long pause happen the first time you started JBossAS after a system reboot? My experience has been that the first time jbossas starts just fine but hangs at this point on every subsequent start, until I reboot my system.
