Your answer helps some, but I needed to understand what to do in the Java work item code.  I found a post on StackOverflow ( http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9433776/jbpm-how-to-get-workitemhandle... http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9433776/jbpm-how-to-get-workitemhandle...) that provided some hints no how to return the results in the work item so they can be used in the next service task.
