On the Solaris box, do you have a stray xalan.jar file, perhaps in an "endorsed"
directory?
If you are not sure, you could add the -verbose:class JVM option to the command line, that
should tell you from which JAR file the JVM is loading the
org.apache.xpath.compiler.FunctionTable class.
