Hi,
Anyone using or have used Drools Clips before? If so, what is your
opinion of it? If not, why not?
I'm pretty curious about it and wanted to start here before pinging
the dev list on who is maintaining it (nor not).

It's like this famous torso of Praxiteles: you can divine the beauty

It was only a POC that partially worked, and then stopped working, so I removed it. No one
was using it, or came forward to help develop it, so figured it was kinder to put it out
of its misery.

I see. How much interest was there in it? Were there any big lessons
learned via the attempt? Eg: that is inherently a good or bad idea or
that Drools Expert is suited well for it or it was a bad hack or
anything?
Having an OSS Java compatible version of CLIPS would be pretty
interesting; not sure there is enough interest in it though to warrant
the investment in time and effort vs licensing JESS.

It worked well enough. It was a translator. It took CLP and converted it
to DRL for execution. We further added a simple shell, so it worked like clips shell.

People can't be blamed. The shell crashes on the slightest typo -
there's not much fun to be had.
As to the usefulness of having a Lisp IF for Drools: I don't see any
benefit in being able to write rules with lots of parentheses if I can
make do without.

I felt like it is nice to be able to use the same syntax and move
between different rules engines (ignoring the complexities of
differences between engines). Having a shell to be able to "play" with
rules and get immediate feedback is also nice from a learning
(engineer) and also teaching (business analyst, stakeholder)
perspective. Mostly it is my personal preference.

no one used the mailing list or jira to open tickets. If we'd
had lots of people asking "we'd really like to use this feature, but it's not
stable enough" we'd have fixed it, stabilised it and matured it. But my feeling
was that if I did this, it would be for all of about 5 users. Jess is there, it's free
to use and very mature, I think if people want CLP they end up just using Jess. If Jess
wasn't there, then there would be more demand.
