The "general roadmap" is the group of issues found at the first JIRA
link.
The second is the main set of changes required. Two things you must
keep in mind before understanding the full breadth of these changes:
1) Hibernate has quite a few places where SQL is generated. This
depends on perspective a bit. What I mean is that there is (mostly) a
single place where SQL *fragments* are generated (the persisters) but
many places where these fragments are assembled and many places where
Dialect rules are applied.
2) Currently HQL queries are translated in 3 phases (3 distinct Antlr
grammars). The first largely just tokenizes the query and builds what
Antlr terms an Abstract Syntax Tree (AST). The third phase simply walks
an AST and produces a SQL string from it. The second phase does
everything else.
What we had decided was that the second phase should be split up into 2
separate, well-defined phases (well-defined in terms of both their
purpose and the structure of their resulting AST). Then HQL translation
will have 4 phases, the first 2 of which will be specific to HQL; the
last two will be generically applicable to ASTs representing queries in
terms of persisters and properties (what JAP calls the abstract schema).
The purpose of the *new second phase* is to normalize the HQL AST. What
that means is to remove unnecessary redundancy. As a trivial example,
there are 2 broad ways to represent a join in HQL (1) explicitly via the
JOIN keyword; or (2) implicitly via property dereferencing. The former
is a much more simple structure with which to do deal, so normalization
of implicit joins will convert them to their corresponding explicit
form.
I need to have this done for 3.4.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the reply.
Is there a general roadmap to these changes somewhere so I can get a
gist of what's going on there? Also a general timeframe for this stuff
to reach a stable release? I'm definitely interested to take a
look-see.
Thanks,
David
