Sometimes it helps to add the maven option --strict-checksums or -C. Max gave me that tip when my maven builds were failing due to http errors. If you get a bogus (empty) artifact from the nexus repo, using the -C option means it will be checked and rejected. You might not be hitting this case but thought I would mention it.
