Note that I have resolved the issue without a PR since the fix was to the CI job config (as per my previous comment on this JIRA)

> We currently have provisional support for the IBM® J9 virtual machine for Java 7 but building narayana master now requires Java 8 (which we inherited from WildFly master which enforces Java 8).
> Now it appears that the J9 virtual machine for Java 8 is not available on linux. When you go to the download page the linux download button redirects to the Oracle Hot Spot VM. We either need to abandon support for J9 or we add a CI machine running z/OS

Yes that is what I have done - the only thing I disabled in the particular CI job are the tests that require a WildFly container:- if we build on Java 7 and then run arquillian tests using an Arquillian WildFly Managed Container Adapter that connects to a WildFly that was built using Java 8 then we get errors because Arquillian says "it cannot start container".
The CI job that tests we build and run on IBMs J9 Java7 JVM (that's a mouthful) should continue to pass. However if, in the future, a developer were to use a Java 8 feature then this CI job will start failing (unless IBM decide to support their J9 Java 8 compiler on linux).

That's WildFly and I do understand why they're moving to 8. However, if someone wants to build a component project using 7 then why wouldn't we allow that within that project until/unless we add features only available in 8?

Not yet but but forum thread https://developer.jboss.org/thread/260122 makes the decision to allow Java 8 for feature development whilst keeping with Java 7 for bug fixes.
I have changed the CI job to compile and run our surefire tests on the Java 7 ibm and skip any tests that require a wildfly container.

Is there anything in Narayana that requires Java8 though? If not then why not still allow that at build time?
