Yes, you should be able to select bound the field you want to use as the
matches expression and pick the bound variable when using the "matches"
operator.
I checked with 5.4 and constructed the following (see attached screen shot
too):-
Applicant( $n : name )
Applicant( name matches $n )
Obviously you won't use Applicant etc.
