Doesn't JCA register the helpers normally? [~jesper.pedersen] and [~maeste]?
Amos, are you sure the helper is not registered? (As in, did you break point it and see it not called?)

The problem was due to xlsx file saved as Strict Open XML Spreadsheet and POI can't process such files for now https://bz.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=57699
