org.jbpm.JbpmException: token '1' can't be locked by 'job[1]' cause
it's already locked by 'token[1]' is thrown when a node has an ActionHandler
that propagates execution via ExecutionContext.leaveNode() to a node that is marked as
async="true".
My ActionHandler.execute() method:

The execute() method from Node does not propagate the execution context if there is a
custom action associated with the node. Based on this code and the documentation above, I
concluded that I must propagate the execution inside my action handler.

A clean unit test that just shows ONE of the problems seems useful.
I think it's going to be really hard to come up with fixes that work in all contexts,
so the more to check against, the better chance the fix will "stick".
So I definitely wouldn't close it, especially after Jeff Johnson found it
reproducible.
This appears to be fallout from the recursive execution model, which I've whined about
at some length already on the forum as an accident waiting to happen. I've done some
work to unwind the recursion, but don't have time to do full regression-testing.
Here's the essence of it. I'm sure I've made some naive assumptions, and
changes between 3.2 and 3.2.1 may require some adjustments.

Does JobExecutorDbTest fail in the same way?
I don't see any reference to it in any JIRA reports, so if it is failing, I'd

I used jobExecutorDbTest as the starting point to the test case. I plagarized heavily.
The changes are:
1. Only creates one process instances. Eliminates the issues associated with multiple job
executor threads running. You can change nbrOfThreads to 1 and still get the same
behavior. I don't this this failure has anything to do with mulitiple job executor
threads or hibernate session issues.
2. The process definition is simpler. It only contains a start node, node1, node2, and end
node.
My biased, novice opinion FWIW: Leave it open. It is slightly different test case, perhaps
simpler case. Based on my review of the discussions and the JIRA reports, I think there
are multiple issues that interact with each other. I tried to create a test case that
isolates one specific problem. With luck solving this problem might make some of the other
things more deterministic and simpler to debug.
Looks like Node.execute(ExecutionContext context) change noticeable from 3.2GA (which I
haven't used)
Just a little more detail.
In 3.2.1 Node.execute() calls org.jbpm.graph.def.GraphElement.executeAction(). This is
the code that locks the token and then actually makes the call to action.execute().
Notice that the lock isn't unlocked until the finally block.

it's already locked by 'token[1]' is thrown when a node has an ActionHandler
that propagates execution via ExecutionContext.leaveNode() to a node that is marked as
async="true".
My ActionHandler.execute() method:

has the responsibility of propagating the execution.
The execute() method from Node does not propagate the execution context if there is a
custom action associated with the node. Based on this code and the documentation above, I
concluded that I must propagate the execution inside my action handler.

The unit test seems to work fine with the provided jar. I used the provided jar in a more
complicated test involving multiple process instances with multiple async nodes and
multiple job executor threads. Everything I've done so far now works as expected.
Sorry for the novice question but how / when will this patch be made part of a release?
Will there be a CVS tag that I can use to pull down 3.2.1 + this patch? Or perhaps the
modified sources can be provided until this gets in a release. I just don't want
build / deploy our system based on a jar for which I don't have source. (not to
mention that I'm curious about the solution).

The changes Tom made to GraphElement revision 1.12 included changes to conditionally lock
the token in the execute() method look. I believe those changes solve the problem my test
case demonstrates.

Yes, that looks like it would cure THIS problem.
I could be dreaming, but it seems like this might also mask real token-control
"fights" on a thread that previously would have been detected by the lock.
I'm not sure the lock does anything at all now. But I must admit that I don't
understand what "fights" the lock was intended to detect in the first place.
It's clearly intra-thread, not inter-thread.
FWIW, IMO, a better fix would be to get rid of the recursion.

it's already locked by 'token[1]' is thrown when a node has an ActionHandler
that propagates execution via ExecutionContext.leaveNode() to a node that is marked as
async="true".
My ActionHandler.execute() method:
