Hello.
With an off-the-shelf JBoss-5.0.1 install on CentOS-5.x server (Kernel 2.6.18) Jboss will
confinue duplicating files in the tmp/vfs-nested.tmp directory. The symptoms match those
of JBSS-6402. I read the old posts and they all report VFS was upgraded in 5.0.1. So if
that is the case - I wonder why my files are being duplicated (or not reaped - I'm
not sure what the behavior is). However, it takes a 12 hours and our partition is full.

It depends on where you deploy things.
Cache only works for predetermined roots - see permanentRoots property in vfs.xml.

OK, I can look at that.
However, is Jboss really supposed to create 731 redundant copies of all my deployables
within an 8 hour period? I believe this is the bug. I will look at permanentRoots in the
meantime.
For the record: I am deploying by copying a single EAR into the deploy/ dir. Let me know
if I can provide any additional information.

If that's all what you're doing ("I am deploying by copying a single EAR into
the deploy/ dir") you should be fine.
So it looks like we missed something. :-(

I just realized that JBOSS_HOME is missing in the environment of the Jboss user. I added
JBOSS_HOME, now it seems that the directory is stable.
My guess is that the job which marks files as invalid is not considering a missing
JBOSS_HOME envvar. It must be failing and then then assuming it failed due to expired
files.
Even though it was a configuration issue, it seems the AS could be more fault-tolerant by
attempting to resolve the vfs-nested.tmp relatively if the JBOSS_HOME-rooted search
fails.

Please refer back to the forum thread. The problem was due to a symbolic link. My
jboss/server directory was a symlink to another directory.
It is quite important to have server files spread across multiple paritions (get the log
to hit /var/log, keep the server files in /var/www, keep jboss home in /opt/jboss.)
Hopefully this bug can be corrected, or an alternative approach can be devised.
