This has to do with whether your code was called from a page that was flagged as "secured" in web.xml or not. What would not be random is for these methods to return your actual login status at all times. There is nothing that prevents a logged in user from visiting an unsecured page, and it is *very* common for real-world applications to have pages that vary content depending on whether the user is logged in or not.
