Subinterfaces that wish to expose that method via JMX can, but exposing it by default is not good OO practice, since it's function is something more logically done internally to a service, not something exposed to external callers. AbstractHAServiceMBeanSupport can still expose the method (as protected). It's certainly a reasonable convenience method for subclasses.
