[~uxdlc] Just a comment about the "Trigger Data Type".
In my mind the drop-down part allowed quick selection of existing data-types (simple and
already defined existing complex). The "pencil" icon (or whatever we change it
to) was to launch the "define, edit, delete" etc new complex data-types
popup/editor... but I'm happy to leave the design to you (this was just my thinking
when I added the drop-down thingie).

As a practitioner I want to be able to define Data Types(ItemDefinition) through the UI
from the DMN editor canvas view.
