This seems to work for me with the current AS 5. However, there's a change in behavior
with the introduction of the mapVirtualHosts method that forces declaration of the vhosts
in server.xml manually. Previously, vhosts mentioned in WEB-INF/jboss-web.xml would be
automatically created.

I have the same issue (dispatching requests to different webapplications deployed on the
same JBOSS, using (virtual hosts), in JBOSS4.2.0, JBOSS4.2.2, JBOSS5.0.0Beta3 similarly as
described above-- I could only get something to work (app1.ear & app2.war) on
4.0.4CR2; or when using host-file entries.
I thought this was a commonly used feature? If not, somebody knows in which 4.2.x release
it would get fixed? & when
-> extra info: sometimes the app-pages render using 127.0.0.1 instead of using the
(correctly resolving) domain name. Don't see how this is possible.
-> extra question: if you have app1.ear deployed on www.test.org, with
<context>/</context> in jboss-web.xml; then it should be accessible through
www.test.org, or through www.test.org/app1 only ?
(Don't find any info on the web, spending already 2days on it : My debug inspiration

Recent testing of this issue and the behaviour now appears as follows.
1 - Add a new Host entry in the server.xml: -

Add a Host entry to the deployers/jbossweb.deployer/server.xml as described in the 4.0.x
section of:
http://wiki.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=VirtualHosts
for example:
<Host name="succubus-vhost"
autoDeploy="false" deployOnStartup="false"
deployXML="false">
<Valve className="org.apache.catalina.valves.AccessLogValve"
prefix="succubus-vhost" suffix=".log"
pattern="common"
directory="${jboss.server.home.dir}/log"/>

add a virtual-host entry to the jmx-console.war/WEB-INF/jboss-web.xml:

<virtual-host>succubus-vhost</virtual-host>
</jboss-web>
and try to access the jmx-console using succubus-vhost:
