I'm trying to run
https://github.com/galderz/infinispan-quickstart/tree/t_710final/jboss-as7 in AS
7.1.0.Final domain mode but it fails.
It does work fine in standalone mode. And it works fine domain too if you only hit one of
the nodes, but not after both have been hit.
So, in domain mode (regardless of browser, tried with Chrome and Firefox), once two
servers are up and running and the app has been deployed to both nodes, when I try to
enter a new cache entry in one of the nodes, I get:

Btw, if I *only* hit one of the servers, I can store and retrieve no problem. If I then
hit the second server, I have no problems loading the page, but if I go back to the first
node, any operation results in that exception. So, this smells like an issue with session
replication to me..., when the 2nd node's web app is hit, it might destroying or
corrupting the session of the 1st node...

Well, seems like the the war deploys on upstream master if, and only if, the war is
deployed by adding it directly to the xml file.
If you deploy the war in upstream via the CLI, there's a weird error thrown as INFO
message which Emanuel has been looking into.
I haven't tried with 7.1.1 yet (newer than 7.1.0 which caused issues and older than
upstream)...

The issue can still be replicated with latest AS 7.1.2 snapshot which I've just built
from master.
It's easy to replicate. Checkout
https://github.com/galderz/infinispan-quickstart/tree/t_710final and follow instructions
in jboss-as7/README.md. The test that fails is "Create a distributed data-grid using
domain mode"
Once the app is deployed, which works fine, hit both servers and then go to one of them
and try to store something in one of them. That's when you see the "View
/home.jsf could not be restored." error.

If you change to client-side JSF state saving then this will work. I've attached a
web.xml that you need for this.
The client side state I'm referring to only applies to the JSF view. It's still a
valid Infinispan demo showing the shared cache.
I definitely should have realized this solution sooner. I just don't do enough JSF
work any more. :-)
I've also attached a CLI script that will set up the domain running the application.
If you need to use server-side state saving then the issue gets a little thornier, but
it's doable.

http://localhost:8430/infinispan-jboss-as7/home.jsf are sharing the same HttpSession.

With server-side state saving, the JSF view is held in the HttpSession. On postback, the
client sends the view ID and JSF retrieves the view from the session. So if the client
sends an old ID, you will get the ViewExpiredException.
This can never happen with client-side state saving because the entire view state is
serialized and cached in a hidden field on the client. That's why the context param
fixes the problem.
So back to your app running with server-side state saving. We have two clients hitting
the same cache of data. Not a problem. But if they are also sharing the same view state
then that does cause a problem. I'll give an example of how we get here:
Client A does a request with no ViewId: server responds with ViewId = 0
Client A sends ViewId=0: server responds with ViewId=1
Client B sends a request no ViewId: server responds with ViewId = 2
Client A sends ViewId=1: server responds with ViewExpiredException
The problem here is the request from Client B. It should generate its own HttpSession and
the server should respond with ViewId=0. But Client A and Client B are sharing the same
replicated HttpSession. So the ViewId cached on the client gets out of sync.
The reason both clients share the same HttpSession is because the session ID is retrieved
from a cookie on the client. The cookie only depends on HTTP domain and path. It
doesn't depend on the port number, which is the only difference in the two requests.
I will make one disclaimer. I haven't verified the above scenario, but I'm pretty

Stan, thanks for much appreciated explanation. I guess the session is the same cos this is
effectively HTTP session replication in action. That's why the issue only happens when
nodes are clustered. I originally thought this was a clustering issue.
It seems to me that this problem can happen very easily. Basically, pretty much any JSF
web app out of the box that has HTTP session replication on will get the issue unless
client side state is maintained for JSF. I wonder whether the default should be the
opposite, to store JSF state in client side. Such default might be less performant than
storing in HTTP session, but at least it will be correct. WDYT?

There is lots of discussion on the net about client side vs. server side state saving.
Which one you choose depends on your application and its requirements. It's not
always an easy choice and it can require a lot of testing to find out which is best.
The problem we ran into pretty much never happens in the real world. Two clients
don't normally share the same HttpSession. In fact, if you run your application the
old way, it will still work with server-side state saving. You just need to hit it from
two different browsers. For instance, I tried it on my machine with FireFox and Chrome.
It worked perfectly with state saving set to "server".
As you know, the usual purpose of HttpSession replication is for failover. This usually
means I'm using "sticky" sessions. If one server dies, the next request
will fail over to the replicated session on another box. In this case, your application
will still work even with server-side state saving. The view ID will not get out of sync
with the session because I am only hitting it from one browser tab.
The way we ran into trouble was that we hit two different ports with two different browser
tabs. This caused the same session ID to be used in both tabs. But the View ID's are
stored in a hidden field of the form. So each tab send a different View ID and they got
out of sync.
