Some further information on this failure.
I am seeing the value for the 'builderThreadLocal' is being initialised by the
thread 'main' as part of the deployment process for a POJO endpoint in deploy at
the time the server is started - if this happens then all threads spawned to process
incoming requests are sharing the same document builder.
Remove dependency on Remoting 2

Remoting 2.x is going away, possibly for the forthcoming JBossAS 5.1 release; Remoting 3
will not have an equivalent generic HTTP abstraction. Anything depending on Remoting 2
will break if it is not ported to some other situation.
