edson, thanks a lot for your answer. now i came to a new problem. i stated the rule as you said: rule "no dog without a tail" when $dog :Dog() not( Tail(dog == $dog) ) then // fire rule end but now, if i do workingMemory.insert(dog); workingMemory.insert(dog.getTail()); workingMemory.fireAllRules(); modifyRetract(dogHandle); dog.changeHashCode(); // do something that changes the hashCode of the dog modifyInsert(dogHandle); workingMemory.fireAllRules(); in the second fireAllRules() the rule fires, even though there is a tail for the dog. am i not allowed to do an opperation that changes the hashCode of the modified object between the modifyRetract() and modifyInsert() ? should i totally retract the object, and insert it again instead? thank you, tim > I believe there is an open ticket for a bug when using "not(exists())" in 5.0. I did not investigated yet, but I believe this is a regression in the new asymmetric matching algorithm in 5.0. Writing rules using java..

Hi Rahul, Its not about storing the whole file into the database. I would have a Table representing the parameteres required to construct a rule. For example. Tables: RuleSetTable: Ruleset_id Ruleset_name RuleTable: Rule_id Rule_name Rule_saliance Rule_condition Rule_consequence Ruleset_id Now while loading the rules the application basically should read from the DB, and construct the rules, as everything required to construct the rules is avaliable in the tables. This requirement had come up because as the rules keep changing quite frequently, we don't want to bring down the application to load a new DRL file. Hope you understood what I want to achieve. Salience guarantee

Hi, Is it really guaranteed that an higher salience rule will fire before an lower one? Does anyone had any problem with that? The docs says: " The most visible one is "salience" or priority, in which case a user can specify that a certain rule has a higher priority (by giving it a higher number) than other rules. In that case, the higher salience rule will always be preferred" I have to simulate a sort of activation group where the rules in the group can only fire exclusively per object and does not influence firing rules outside the group. I am using salience as part of the solution. Regards, Leo

Does anybody know the answer to my question? I'm not able to solve this issue and don't find any clarifying tutorial either.... Hi, I'm new in drools and I'm having some problems accessing an xml field. I'm using drools with jaxb to treat xml files that follow an specific xsd. Hi, in drl, is there a way to specify whether a rule should go into business rule asset or tech rule asset after import? and what about category info(doesn't look like you can specify that part of info in drl)? thanks Jeff

Backward Chaining Support

Hi this question has been asked previously but it has been answered as "the next major release will have backward chaining". Drools Wiki doesn't mention backward chaining. So, does all of it mean that Drools doesn't have backward chaining as of now? different behavior in Eclipse vs. command line

This is related to yesterday's post titled "trouble dynamically changing packages of a rulebase". I decided to try and reduce the problem down as much as possible so I started with "Hello World" program automatically created with Eclipse when you create a new Drools Project. I modified the program to do the following additional work: 1. unload the pkg 2. add a second pkg to the same rulebase * (new rule set is same, except is uses the string "So long" instead of "Goodbye") 3. - create new session 4. - add new facts to the new session * (this time I use the word "Welcome" instead of "Hello") 5. - fireall rules When I run within Eclipse, I get: Hello World Goodbye cruel world Goodbye cruel world Welcome World So long cruel world Notice that the Goodbye line comes out twice. The second time is printed when I single step (in the eclipse debugger) over the line ruleBase.addPackage( pkg ); in step 2 above. When I run from the command line I don't get the extra line ("javadr" is just a one line shell script that has all of the drools classpath stuff specified). javadr com/sample/DroolsTest Hello World Goodbye cruel world Welcome World So long cruel world I don't know of this is related to my real issue (see yesterday's post) or not. The similarity is that BOTH BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY when run under Eclipse vs. command line. trouble dynamically changing packages of a rulebase

I'm using 4.07. Sorry for the long winded post but I was trying to give enough background and code snippets to be useful. The way I'm running data through drools is in a batch mode. As I've gained more experience I see that my app may be better suited for the stateless mode, but for now I'm still running stateful. A "batch" consists of: - loop on array of objects calling session.insert(a, true); // then I save off the factHandle - session.fireAllRules(); - loop on array of objects calling session.retract(factHandle); All has worked fine until I attempted to add the ability to dynamically update a rule package. It worked both under Eclipse, and running just "java -jar myCompiledApp.jar". My application has rules split into two parts. Part A (adm.rules) is static and contains the logic tied directly to the application. Part B (adm.userrules) is the user half of the rules where the application can be customized to fit the user. After adding the logic to dynamically add the user rules all appears to work fine when run in eclipse. BUT when I run outside of eclipse (i.e. java -jar ....) it doesn't work. Only part of my static rules fire. Here is the code snippet that dynamically loads the new package: pkg = pMgr.buildDslPackage(rule_str, dsl_def_file); if (userRulesLoaded) { Package pkgA[] = ruleBase.getPackages(); for (Package p : pkgA) { System.out.println("LOADED: " + p.getName()); } System.out.println("Removing: " + UserXmlRulesToDrls.getUserRulesPackageName()); pMgr.removePackage(ruleBase, UserXmlRulesToDrls.getUserRulesPackageName()); } System.out.println("Adding: " + pkg.getName()); pMgr.addPackage(ruleBase, pkg); pMgr.createSession(ruleBase); userRulesLoaded = true; } pMgr.addPackage, createSession, etc. are small wrappers: public void createSession(RuleBase ruleBase) { if (session != null) { session.dispose(); } session = ruleBase.newStatefulSession(); } public void addPackage(RuleBase ruleBase, Package pkg) throws Exception { ruleBase.addPackage(pkg); } public void removePackage(RuleBase ruleBase, String pkgName) { ruleBase.removePackage(pkgName); } Here are a couple of dummy rules I added in an attempt to debug this. These are from the static "adm.rules" package: rule "testme" when $ar : ActionArchive(); then System.out.println("Archive: " + $ar.getFile().getFullPath()); end rule "testme2" when $f : File(); then System.out.println("File: " + $f.getFullPath()); end I always get the "archive" print (as expected), but never get the "File" print after the first dynamically set of user rules (the first load works, second and subsequent loading of user rules doesn't). My user rules also have a "when" based on File() and it always works as expected. Last, here is some sample output, running the exact same set of input through each time. JSR94 and compiled packages

I know that the JSR94 interface can consume a DRL file but can it start with a precompiled package from BRMS or output of ant compilation? Can we only consume compiled packages with the native drools API (RuleAgent)? My company is exploring replacing Blaze Advisor with the JBOSS Rules engine. We are currently testing with 4.0.7 but would move to an early release of 5.x if we need to. If there is any documentation or another thread that someone could point me to that would be great.
