This could actually still be done in 3.6.x, *before* moving to Java 8 in 4.0, so TCP_NIO
(and possibly UDP_NIO) can be used in Java 7...

Merge TCP and TCP_NIO into one protocol. Adapt it to use NIO2 (when available).
