could possibly change the contentNode stuff to pick it up on the constructor, but perhaps
lazy is best.

getVersionContentNode common functionality.
Can also probably tidy up the handling of version items as opposed to head items (ie
updates shoudl fail on all versioned ones, but restore can succeed).
