Back end JBoss AS instances make this load balancer aware of deployments of clustered services; it load balances requests between them. Client proxies know how to talk to the load balancer(s). Main benefit is no need to open firewall to allow traffic to a fluctuating set of back end JBoss instances. Could also be useful in proxying requests from IIOP clients.
