The attached portlet demonstrates it. Steps to reproduce: 1. open the page, in the portlet click the render url (<portlet:renderURL portletMode="edit" />) 2. the edit-mode jsp appears, with an action url (<portlet:actionURL />) 3. click the action URL, the portlet goes back to "view" mode.
