One thing that strikes me as extremely clumsy is the TreeCache.UNITIALIZED flag that is set in the data map itself. I believe that adding the flag to the node can accomplish the same thing. It might make sense to look at this http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/util/EnumSet.html for setting flags, etc.
