You're vigilant !!
So as it turns out, the quickstarts etc are essentially broken as they stand because they
use this code. So, I wouldn't see a problem with updating these wherever this code is
used (plus some comments), while leaving them "broken". At least whoever comes
along to fix it, will be trying to fix against the new and correct code and will have
comments to guide them.
