Phillip, I've attached an unofficial build (JDK 1.4.2) that uses Doug Lea's
concurrent packages (also attached). Can you give it a try? With the tests I ran here I
saw between 20% and 5% improvement (though typically at the lower end of the scale). As
they say: your mileage may vary.

I'm seeing some contention on the object _transactions in the class
com.arjuna.ats.internal.jta.transaction.arjunacore.TransactionImple. Most of the
contention happens in the getTransaction() method.
