Agreed.
Also it would make sense to have String and Serializable variable persisters
pre-configured by default for work item handlers.
(seems this JIRA tracker does have love for Opera: could not place a vote for this item)

The parameters of a work item, stored in the work item info, should also support
pluggable persistence strategies, so that their value is not stored as part of the binary
info related to the WorkItemInfo but linked to it, just like a process instance links to
external variables.
