Fixed (mostly) according to solution. Backported to 2.6. Passed both unit test suites on
trunk and 2.6. Started 40 instances concurrently, always ended up with a 40-node cluster.

So we are starting up ~30 hosts at the same time running 2.6.1 and have seen
a number of exception stacks and anomalies.
There are a couple nasty bugs in the ClientGMSImpl.join() method which
caused an infinite loop of NPE exceptions or other errors. I fixed 3 of
them and left one more for someone who knows the code better. See the
patch.
