plan so far (may contain lies):
the register.xhtml will need to pull in a subsetted editProfile if
portlet.xml->portletPreferences->profileAtRegistration is true. However the current
editProfile sucks in all of userInfo which expects things like "username" to be
bound. A raw inclusion of userInfo.xhtml similar to what is done in editProfile.xhtml
results in an error on the UTF8 conversion of username. Therefore userInfo needs to be
broken up into profile info and base info. The profile info will be the piece included
(probably with another template) in register.xhtml when the profileAtRegistration setting
is true, but not when it is false. (there are other changes that are needed in the
services themselves that I'll detail in a bit)

Actually it looks like the main work is to cut the center out of profile.xml and make it
separate but included. The userInfo.xhtml can be avoided entirely during registration.

after the base cosmetics in the xhtml are solved you have the problem of picking the right
manager and submitting. It may be necessary to create a new action or object or both that
combines the functionality. Not clear to me how to do it. JSF seems a bit limited in
this respect..but it could just be the existing structure of things...

I've completed the part that I've detailed here and will upload it momentarily.
My next task is to make it possible to have custom fields. It looks like with the present
jsf version this may not really be a problem, the previous version was quite limited.
however I'll be verifying this. This won't be the whole kit and kaboodle with
dynamic pages as this is beyond the scope/budget but at least gives people in the 2.6
timeframe the ability to turn on profile creation at registration based on a simple
configuration variable. They may then need to add their own fields.

attached. I think this is pretty generally useful as not too many companies make data
"optional" for their users. This preserves the "club" type version of
optional information and provides the "enterprise' mentality of "all your

Presently the user has the ability to register, then after logging in they create a
profile. At many places that portal will be used registration and initial profile
creation are the same.
Patch changes the JSF screens to allow the user to put in a setting
"profileAtRegistration" in the
portal-identity.sar/portal-identity.war/WEB-INF/portlet.xml
This is done with some fairly minor structural changes to the xhtml files and about 5
lines in the createUserAction.
