Simple easy issues in the issue tracker (JIRA) of any jboss project
(including drools)
are labeled with "starter". Labels are found in the bottom of the JIRA
filter.
The idea is: we set aside those issues, so new contributors have easy
task to roll into the project.
Each such issue also contains a list of class files are probably related
to fixing the issue.
Here's the list on drools (expert, fusion, planner):
https://issues.jboss.org/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?reset=true&jqlQue...
Here's the starter list on guvnor:
https://issues.jboss.org/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?reset=true&jqlQue...
Currently, there are only a few open ones on drools-planner I believe.

Might I suggest your friend looks at Drool's JIRA list:

Pick something they feel they understand and would like to tackle.
Join us on IRC for guidance.
Of course, your friend might prefer to help with a project that uses
Drools...
In which case might I suggest your fried looks at Guvnor's JIRA list:

A friend of mine has recently graduated university, and is
thinking of maybe
trying out development with drools as she is interested in
Logistics and
organisation. Does anyone please have some quick easy low priority
tasks
involving drools she can perform over the internet?
