Neither, I just created and java project and imported files into it.
Is there a link with the example with the eclipse project files in it I can download so I
can just import it as a existing project?

Did you File->Import...->Maven->Existing Maven Projects? I believe this is
offered with the M2Eclipse plugin.
Or, did you perform mvn eclipse:eclipse to build a Eclipse .project file?
Either of these will ensure your classpath dependencies are correctly setup.
