work item handler, it doesn't do anything special that nobody elee can do.
What you basically need to do is ensure that your flows are persisted, your
work item handler doesn't complete immediately instead it dispatches the job
to your external system. When the job comes back (days later) the work item
handler is responsible for loading up the workflow again (if it isn't
currently loaded) and then carrying on the process with the result.
If you look at the source code for the human task work item handler and
search the mailing list archives you can find more information on how
exactly to do this - I think the docs give some information as well.
