I'm getting this too.
I use eclipse (3.2.2) and Drools 4. I created a very simple program from one
of the examples. Basically a .java file and a .drl file. It works fine in
the IDE but if I try it from the command line (DOS or MAC OSX) from either
the java, the class or a jar, then they all fail with the
noclassdeffounderror.
I tried commenting all the drools bits out - works. Putting them back bit by
bit and it fails as soon as it executes any drools code:
In main() it executes the line:
'RuleBase ruleBase = readRule();'
and the function snippet it calls is below.
Running it in the IDE works, from the CLI it prints up to RULE000 and then
gives the error.

new to Java so forgive me if it's obvious, but it's really annoying me.

Using the simple files (based on the examples) I cannot get it to run outside
of eclispe. Can anyone suggest any solution? Below is the command I am using
at the moment (though I have tried lots of permutations, including putting
every jar I can find in the JAR directory and running the code direct rather
than from a jar. Other code works fine and this one runs until it gets to
the PackageBuilder bit so pretty sure it's not related to the jar). I've
also listed the current contents of the JAR directory, I have tried lots of
other combinations and am stumped as to what to try next. Drools looks good
but if I can't produce a single jar that other people can use then it's
completely pointless.
This one is on Windows XP but it doesn't work on the Mac either or on
Windows XP inside the Macs emulator (Parallels). Same result everywhere.

Your classpath is totaly wrong half that stuff isn't needed, our
probably confusing the system. you should read this document
http://anonsvn.labs.jboss.com/labs/jbossrules/tags/4.0.0.13773GA/README_D...
For runtime, drools-core, the only dependency needed is MVEL. For
drools-compiler you only need antlr-runtime and either/both janino and
jdt-core. Thats it.
Obviously there are other deps if you need jsr94 or decision tables, but
they are noted in that README.
And for the love of god don't include different versions of the same
thing - i.e. stuff like below.

Yeah, as I said in the post I have tried all that.
I started with the 4 jars from the drools-bin archive (v4.0.0). Then added
the 10 from the lib directory in there. None of that worked.
Then I tried adding every jar I could fine - no luck.
Then I tried just the v4.0.1 versions (just the 14 files) again no luck.
The current set was just a final desperate attempt.
No matter what I do I get the same error.
Tried java 1.5.0_09, java 1.5.0_11 and java 1.6.0_02.

I should also say I followed the document too.
My first try was:
drools-core, mvel14-1.2beta27.
then:
drools-core, drools-compiler, antlr3-runtime-3.0,
eclipse-jdt-core-3.2.3.v_686_R32x.
I tried plenty of other combinations too but no joy.

I got the Stack Overflow error when I use Drool 4.0 pluggin. Here is what I
did:
I have been using Drool 3.0.6 pluggin for a while without anyproblem. Now I
want to upgrade to 4.0, so I delete the old 3.0.6 pluggin, download the 4.0
pluggin from the website, then drop the org.drools.eclipse_4.0.0.jar to my
Eclipse Europa's pluggin.
It starts up my Eclipse just fine, I can see new Drool icon and menu. But
when I open any .drl file, I got the Stack Overflow error.
Any idea?
Here is my Eclipse's parameter:
-Xms384m
-Xmx512m
-XX:PermSize=128m
-XX:MaxPermSize=128m

Those are the wrong deps for 4.0. please lookt at the README in the distr:

I've been trying all day and still can't get it to work.
Is anyone able to produce a simple example, .java, .drl and whatever jars
are required in a single directory, then zip it up so all I need to do is
unzip it, then run it with 'java xxx.java -cp . '
That way I can look at the files to try and figure out what I am doing
wrong.
I just can't figure out what my mistake is!
