If it is not completely apparent by the subject line I am a complete noob to
Drools and Maven...
I have done a lot of reading and I think the Drools Server exposed through
soap will work for my design...
I have found some material to get me started, but I am perplexed by a very
simple issue...
Using Maven what archetype do I use to set-up the project... Using that
archetype how to set-up the packages under the archetype... And where do I
get the dependences for the drools server to set-up the server with spring
configuration... (Yes I am a noob to spring also)
I could hack at it and surely get some format to work... But I do not want
to find out later that the set-up does not grow with the project... So what
are some best practices... I have looked and can not find them or if I did
find them I am to much of a noob to understand them...
The project will have clients of the Drools Server service.
The project will have Java classes fired by the rules. These classes may
have to become exposed web services later, I just don't know yet...
Thanks for any advice, sorry for the noob post... I have just run out of
ideas to get this off the ground...

Hi There,
The Drools Server is a Web Application. So you basically download it and
deploy it inside your servlet container like tomcat/jetty.
You don't need any architype for this task.
After you deploy the Drools Server you can get the WSDL exposed to create
your clients. Or you can test the interaction using SOAP UI.
Take a look at this posts that explain the first steps using Drools Server:

This is what generated my question, kinda... So, I deploy the drools
server... Do I create a project in eclipse so that I can add new rules
resources... Then I had the question of, where do I put code that will be
triggered by rules...
So, do I just import the deployed drools server into an eclipse project and
add to the project then re-package the changes and deploy to tomcat?... If
this is the case how do I do I import this as a project and what is the
folder structure where I should add the java code to be triggered by my
rules?
Or I was thinking that I have to bring the drools server into my project so
that maven updates automagically as new drools server updates are
deployed...
In either case, what is the correct folder structure to start adding the
code I need for my project...
Hopefully, this makes sense... If not I will try to clarify...

If you know what rules you need to include in drools server before starting
it, you can create a project that contains all the model objects and rules
and after that create the spring configuration inside the deployed drools
server. After that you package your project and move the compiled package
inside drools server. That should do the work.
If you don't know before starting the server the rules and resources that
you will need, you can use Drools Grid to dynamically create sessions inside
of it.
I will write a blog post about it.
I'm working in an end to end scenario to demonstrate how to do that.

The drools grid solution sounds like what I need... So I am very interested
to see the post... If there is anything I can do to help, I would be happy
to help... Unfortunately, since I am such a noob with all this I do not know
how much help I could be... Until then, for prototyping I will do as you
suggested...

Sure,
Using maven it's the recommended way. It will package your compiled code for
you.
After that you should move the resulting jar into the WEB-INF/lib/ directory
I strongly recommend you to build some simple rules using some simple domain
objects and testing how Drools Server works with that, looking at the
requests and responses that you get into SOAP ui.
The next step is creating your own client getting the WSDL and
autogenerating the stubs in your own project.

I have some much to learn that I actually only want to create a project and
recreate the test from your post first... This way I can figure out how to
deploy the project before I start learning how to write rule and code
triggered by the consequence...
Is there somewhere you can point me to learn about setting up the project
like you are suggesting... Or what type of project are you suggesting to use
to deploy my code? I have never used Maven and it is kinda confusing knowing

Well.. yes.. you need to learn the maven basics and then it's just a web
application exposing some web services endpoints.
For creating your project that will contain your Domain objects and rules
you can use the quickstart maven archetype.
That will create a simple Java Jar project.

I have been able to get a basic structure working... but now I need to test
that the rule is working... I was going to use the soapUI that was used in
the blog... however, I do not know how to create a object and pass it into
the knowledge base to be inserted... could you shed some light on how to do
this, please...

I had exact same error .. the problem was the way i was calling the
webservice. Then i found a post with a suggested way, which worked for me !
This is what I did.
I was trying to connect to the web service through a PHP soap client ..
here is what worked for me.

$post_data = file_get_contents("drools-request.xml");
