We are contemplating using Drools in our project.
We need the following info:
Is Drools jdk1.3 compatible?
Can we use it for jdk1.3 based project?

No its not JDK1.3 compatible. I've heard somene has done a port, but
they haven't provided the code.

Hi Mark,
If Drools is not jdk1.3 compliant, then could you suggest any other
open-source jDK1.3-based Rule Engine that is as good as DROOLS is in terms
of algorithm used, performance etc?

You have drools 2.5 - but thats a very different beast. There are no
other open source rules engines really. Have you maybe tried an older
version of jess?

There are a huge array of changes since 2.5 - completely different rule
format, the internals have been rewritten (more complete RETE
implementation, etc), IDE support, and so on. And assuming you see all or
most of these as improvements, you could argue that Drools 2.5 isn't as good
a rule engine.
That said, if it does the job for you, it's a viable choice -- we still have
projects using 2.5, and it's not posing a problem for us.
