The exceptions you reported may be due to a serious RETE corruption... in the first case, it seems that a JoinNode is trying to access a FromNode's memory... in the latter, a constraint's context can not be retrieved correctly. Ok, so it's quite likely that something bad happens during one of those addKnowledgePackages. Would you be able to help us debug it? We'd need to trace the last addition/removal before the exception was generated. Another way to look at this, would be to catch and debug the exception to see which RETE node(s) are involved and thus which rules. In the CCE you reported, a FromNodeMemory is returned in place of a JoinNodeMemory.. it probably happens in the class org.drools.common.ConcurrentNodeMemories, where memories are indexed by node id. I suspect that during one of those add/remove cycles a node id was reassigned without clearing the memory cache first. In particular, the method BaseNode.doRemove() should be called for the FromNode owning the id which ends up being assigned to the JoinNode. There was indeed a leak in locking. I have three operations - add, del, exec rules. add and delete were atomic but exec was not. Before getting reference to KB in exec rules, I made sure add/del were not accessing KB ... but I need lock KB even when rules are executing and release the lock when rules have executed (although I get a stateful session from KB before executing rules) I suspect this error occurs when rules are executing and at the same time add/delete rule is invoked. Ejaz, without seeing the "original" rule and the "updated-so-that-it-will-not-fire" version of the same, there is little we can do. Are you by chance replacing something like Pattern( field == $previouslyBoundVariable ) with ? Pattern( field == $previouslyBoundVariable ) from $nowhere Problem is, there could be zillions of possibly suspect cases, and nobody in the community has the time to try them all. I understand that you may not be in a position to release your rules to the public, but it's common practice to "de-identify" rules by replacing class names and literal values with "Foos" and "Bars", so to preserve the structure of the logic without exposing its meaning - which out of its context would probably make no sense anyway. The KB lock/unlock event is, afaik, only fired when a thread acquires a WRITE lock on a KB (e.g. to add or remove rules), while an insertion should only acquire a READ lock, an event which is not fired. If my understanding is correct, the container thread "http-8084-2" animates the RuleRunner and spawns a service thread - 2967417 - to do the actual insertion. Ok, more pieces in the puzzle :). I still do not understand why you are getting lock/unlock on insertions. In 5.5.1-SNAPSHOT and 5.6.0-SNAPSHOT, those events are fired only when a WRITE lock is acquired to modify the RETE. Insertions and fireAllRules use READ locks that do not generate that kind of events. Are you getting them even when you run the rules in Eclipse? Notice that WRITE locks are also acquired when STATELESS sessions are used, rather than STATEFUL ones, (which btw was dcrissman's case)... but you are using STATEFUL sessions, so this shouldn't be the case, right? Otherwise, I'd really like to know why the lock is acquired... I would go as afar as forcing a controlled exception in the KBEventListener to see the stack trace during one of those insertions. Hi , I have stripped down my use case to basic level where it throws the exception. One observation I made is the addition of * $offers : Offers() * to rules is causing the exception. If I omit this statement in the rules there is no issue.
