It's a little bit under protest that I'm submitting this error,
because it kind of creeps me out that I have to compile all drools
projects from root just to get drools planner samples to compile in my
IDE, but Geoffrey asked - and I am highly appreciative of everything
he and the drools team is doing.
it also doesn't appear that hudson has been building either, so not
sure why my input even matters....
Anyway here is the error I am getting trying to compile drools on my
box (java 1.6)

It's a jdk/maven setup problem I think.
Can you try, these commands (without the $):
$ echo %JAVA_HOME%
=> should give something like C:\... and it should be a JDK, not a JRE
$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_16"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_16-b01)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 14.2-b01, mixed mode)
$ mvn --version
Maven version: 2.0.9
Java version: 1.6.0_16

it'll get the rest Drools from your local and remote repository. If you
are using SNAPSHOT it would probably need you to do a one of install of
all the drools modules, so it can find them in your local maven repo.

Well, in every java development environment I've used since 1998 <jdk>/bin has
been in the path, so it does not strike me as an unusual requirement. The build needs to
know the location of the compiler, after all? If there is some better, more generalizable
method for specifying that location I'm sure the drools dev team would be open to
suggestion.

The drools team is doing exactly what it should do, I'm just an old
grump. I burned 18 months attempting to take rules to the masses of
developers like myself who did not want to enter a priesthood just to
use some better technology. I failed, so I'm ridiculously
over-sensitive about artificial roadblocks. No forgiveness for my rude
manners is expected.
Someday maybe you'll just be able to use drools planner examples in a
single easy to use maven already eclipsed project without having to
download and build source from svn. When it is time, it will happen.

What would make it easier?
1) A zip with only the examples (no drools or drools planner code) that
has a pom which has the jboss repository already included? So it's just
a matter of opening the pom.xml?
Or even better, include eclipse, intellij and netbeans files too?
2) Or would a maven archetype be even better? The problem with maven
archetypes is it's maintance: it's get forgotten and in the end the
archetype becomes stale.
I won't go for option 2) any time soon, but I wonder if we can somehow
configure the assembly plugin to do 1) and if there is intrest in such a
download.

complex than that should be required for a user (does not apply to
drools developer which I am not)

Thanks Geoffrey, adding a repository such as JBoss's to one's maven
settings.xml file (or to nexus if one's shop uses that) is a standard
operating procedure in most shops so it shouldn't be a problem, once
the jars are there, and kept up to date. Not a problem at all. One can
even add a repository to a pom.xml, if one is too lazy to modify the
settings.xml.
Main thing is that this is many orders of magnitude less error prone
and easier than downloading the entire drools code tree and compiling
it all in maven with a custom javac call.
