Yes we should, unless we want to alienate ourselves to make Interoperability (WS-I) meaningless! > don't know about this, or +don't *want* to adhere to it+, so we should just handle the possibility of non-UTF-8 or UTF-16 encoded documents just in case? The success of JAVA was with its specification adherence. We can always support a non-confirming/not-a xml too as a WSDL and parse it, but what purpose does it solve? Your solutin is better than changing the code that doesn't have access to the PersistenceMetaData at the moment. Thanks for the idea. It is surely you are using JDK-1.5 and activation-1.1. So I guess the Mac maybe has some additional system configuration to support javamail. In this case WSRP might be an option? In 2007 we found at help.sap.com some information of how to integrate SAP funtionality into third-party portals. Keeping that in mind, our approach is to have the read/write stuff done by the SAP team and just integrate the resulting (webdynpro?) pages into our jboss-portal by iframes. A third option, at the lowest level, might be SAP Jco? Our entitlement tema has used that to manage users in the SAP UME. Essentially: 1. Don't use ICU4-J. 2. By default, assume UTF-8 as we do now. 3. If you look inside icu4j-charsets-4.4.jar, they have 176 conversion tables!
