My understanding is it did, but not properly, i.e. the expressions were resolved by the JGroups system property replacement logic. And there was a bug related to that. That improper support isn't ideal, but it may have worked for a lot of use cases. Rejecting the expression now would break those use cases. In particular it would make a rolling upgrade of a cluster problematic, perhaps impossible.
