I've seen in the latest docs on trunk that it's possible to set some
constraints on a start node so that a process would execute when the
appropriate rules matched.
However I can't see an example of this, nor can I edit the properties
through the Eclipse UI.
Is it possible to define a condition under which the process will
execute and then have the process start when the rule matches. Is
this done external to the rule file or can it be done on the rulefile
itself? I could see a few ways of doing this and am looking for some
guidance towards the correct (read as easiest for biz users) method.
1) Kick off a process that the first node after the start is a
ruleflow group (serving basically as a gate)
2) Deploy a rule that when it matches starts up the process (separate
rule file and separate ruleflow file)
3) Define a start condition in the rule file and deploy the process.
Then whenever the rule matches, a process instance is started.
Personally I like #3 and the docs seem to imply it's possible, but I
can't see how.

The 3rd option you describe is currently possible in the core engine,
however support has not yet been added to the graphical designer for this.
You can however manually add it in the XML directly for now. If you look at
the XSD it should look something like this:
<start id="1" name="Start" >
<triggers>
<trigger type="constraint" >
<constraint type="rule" dialect="mvel"
>p:Person()</constraint>
<mapping type="in" from="p.getName()" to="SomeVar"
/>
<mapping type="in" from=""SomeString""
to="SomeOtherVar" />
</trigger>
</triggers>
</start>
As you can see you can also specify additional parameters (that are passed
in as variables to the process instance), either by relating them to a
parameter of the rule or by specifying an explicit value.
Note that it is internally simply translated to your 2nd option.
We'll try to add the editor for this property for the Drools.5.0.0.GA
release.

Thanks for the advice on this. Is it possible for the constraint of
type 'rule' to be a link to an existing rule? This would preserve all
the goodness of being able to be viewed by analysts in Guvnor, use
DSLs, etc.
Alternatively, as you mentioned that internally Drools, translates
this form to my 2nd option, is there an example that shows a rule with
the RHS starting the process?

You have access to the ProcessContext from the RHS side of a rule via the
kcontext variable. To start a process from the RHS, u can use the following
code.
kcontext.getKnowledgeRuntime().startProcess("proceeeFoo");

Sure, my rules detect problems with objects of various types. If a problem
is encountered, I want to execute a repair workflow, but the workflow (Drools
flow) needs to be aware of which object to operate on. So the rule needs to
bind to a specific object and pass that object to the flow.

I think that the overloaded method for starting a process
ksession.startProcess( String name, Map<String,Object> name2var )
is what you want.
