Hi all, I'm completely new to Drools and Guvnor and I'm following the "JBoss
Drools Business Rules" book's instructions for getting familiar with Drools.
When adding action to rule I cannot get the "add more options" feature
working in Guided Editor - "U->" like icon is missing and the "pen"
icon
does not work either. For those who have the book, I'm talking about the
example in page 102. The data model is exactly as described in the sample
case. Any idea of what's the problem?

I don't have the book to which you refer and therefore don't know exactly
what icon is missing.
If Guvnor 5.2 (and I assume 5.1) you add more options to a rule by clicking
on the "(show options...)" text at the bottom of a rule (assuming you're
meaning in the guided rule editor).
What version of Guvnor are you using?

The book is the PAKT Publishing book JBoss Drools Business Rules by Paul
Browne.
Am using Drools 5.1 and Guvnor 5.0.0.SNAPSHOT 25673M
Using the guided editor to create a rule that states if a sale has a value
of over 100 then discount it by 10.
Have partly created a rule as exactly how the book says as follows:
1. Create a new rule and add a condition using a sales fact (This has been
done OK.)
2. When adding the first constraint, enter a variable name (mySales) (this
has been doen OK)
3. Select GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO in the PLEASE CHOOSE drop-down box, and
use the pencil icon to enter the value (100) - (this has been done OK)
4. On the second line of the newly created rule, click on the green arrow
above SALES. An option to bind the actual sales total to a variable is
shown. In this dialog box, assign it to salesValue (this has been done OK)
5. In the guided editor, The Add new Action dialog box now has additonal
options. Click on the green + sign whcih is next to THEN to make these
options appear. In this dialog box choose to modify the mySales fact (This
has been done OK)
The next bit is the bit that I cannot get to work:
Back in the guided editor, click on the pencil icon and enter the formula
(=salesValue-10)
What happens is that when you click to add the formula - you do not get that
option, you only get an option to ADD A FIELD and it shows a list of
available fields
I have gone upt to step 5 and viewed the source which is as follows:

OK.
I tried here (admittedly with 5.2, but I don't believe we've changed the
area in question much - if at all).
These are the steps I followed (which might highlight an additional step not
clear in the book):-
- <Complete up to step 5>
- Click on the pencil icon (as you have done)
- Select the "sales" field
- The field "sales" will be shown with another pencil icon
- Click on the "new" pencil icon and you are given the option of a
literal value or a formula.
- Choose formula....

Hi Mike,
Thnaks for your help. Still a problem I am afraid.
I have done what you sugested (up to step 5) I have clicked the pencil icon
and added the "sales" field nad as you say the sales is shown with another
pencil icon. HOwever when you try to click on the "new" pencil icon -
nothing happens at all. It's as if you cannot edit it.

That sounds very "bug-like" ;)
I will try to find a copy of "Guvnor 5.0.0.SNAPSHOT 25673M" , but it is (a)
quite old now, (b) a "SNAPSHOT" so not the final 5.0.0 release anyway....
I suspect (but can't be certain) that the book might have mentioned use of
this version because it needed features added to that release in order to
"go to print" - if so a newer version should be usable just the same.
Any reason you can't use Guvnor 5.1 (5.2 *should* be available later this
week too)?

somehow corrupt.
Where did you get it from (and can you re-try?). Send me the link (and what

I have managed to reproduce the problem with drools guvnor standalone 5.1.
Or actually i get the pen icon on my laptop while Pekka does not.

I believe we have managed to account for the "missing" pencil icon.
AFAIK, Marros is experiencing difficulties installing Guvnor 5.1 and Jarno
reports being able to replicate the problem with Guvnor standalone 5.1
(although states they "get the pen icon" so I'm not clear on the actual
problem).
One by one, please advise if you've been able to install Guvnor 5.1 and
whether you get the "pen icon" and can select "Formulae".

Sorry I did not reply yesterd (I was out of work on holiday)
I decided to start again from scratch:
1. I downloaded (from www.jboss.org/jboss/downloads)
jboss-as-distribution-6.0.0.Final.zip. Unzipped it and am able to run this
version of the AS without a problem.
2. I then downloaded (from www.jboss.org/drools/downloads)
drools-5.1.1-guvnor.war. I then copied this to the deploy folder for the AS
server. I have attached a screenshot of what happens next.

The AS then just sits at this screen.
If I then try to access http://localhost:8080/drools-guvnor I get a http 404
error.
At this point I tried stopping and restarting the AS. Part way through the

the same will probably apply to 5.1.1 too.
Guvnor 5.2 has customised versions for various AS's (that basically remove
unnecessary JARs). It should be available *today*. Have a look on
http://www.jboss.org/drools/downloads.html later.... (if all goes well!)
It is a shame, as a newbie, you are having this much problem :(

Again I trashed everything I had set up and started again.
I extracted the jboss-as-distribution-6.0.0.final.zip to a folder called
c:\software\jboss on my pc.
I have also created environment variables for JAVA_HOME and JBOSS_HOME and
made sure they are included in the PATH statement (oout of interest I have
installed the JDK1.6.0_26 release)
I can then launch the AS from here (by running the run.bat file from the
\bin folder) and I am able to open a browser to the home page on
http://localhost:8080
I then extracted the guvnor-distribution-5.2.0.final.zip to a seperate
folder. Then went to the binaries folder and before copying I renamed
guvnor-5.2.0.Final-jboss-as-6.0.war file to just guvnor.war (The Guvnor
manual recommends this for a "nicer" URL) I then copied this file into

Again I can see the AS trying to deploy the guvnor.war file. the first thing
that happens is an error stating "Failed to add deployment:

Hi
I have managed to replicate what Marros has found on the 5.2 Final release.
Running through the console logs, it looks like it may be related to the
following issue:
https://issues.jboss.org/browse/GUVNOR-1341
which was fixed on 25th May for the 5.3 snapshot. I've downloaded the latest
5.3 snapshot as suggested in that post and it deploys correctly and runs in
the same JBoss installation that was failing before.
I wonder if the change wasn't rolled back into the 5.2 release?

Hello.
I can account for me and Pekka (capeja).
We were trying to get Guvnor Standalone 5.1 in Windows 7 and Firefox 4.01
Results:
Jarno: Got the pen icon and was able to enter formula
Pekka: Did not get the pen icon even as we did everything the same way
We will try again with Guvnor 5.2 as it is not released.

Can those affected please try guvnor-5.2 on tomcat?
As Eamon points out there appears to be a problem with guvnor-5.2 on JBoss
AS 6 due to https://issues.jboss.org/browse/GUVNOR-1341
I see a new JIRA https://issues.jboss.org/browse/GUVNOR-1497 has been
created for guvnor-5.2 on JBoss AS 6.

I have now managed to fix this problem, following advice here:
https://issues.jboss.org/browse/GUVNOR-1341
The workaround is to remove the GuvnorApplication.class from
guvnor-5.2.0.Final-jboss-as-6.0.war (removed this file
\WEB-INF\classes\org\drools\guvnor\server\jaxrs\GuvnorApplication.class) -
I used 7Zip to open the .war file and then remove the class from it.
The deployment of the .war file onto JBocc AS 6.0 then works.
Also found that the original problem in adding formula to the rule now
works.

Hi,
I installed the latest jboss-6.0.0.Final and top of it the appropriate .war
file from guvnor-distribution-5.2.0.Final (with the modifications as
instructed by Marros). Guvnor does not start (404 error) anymore.
I would need your help on this. Thanks in advance.
