Hi, I have recently tried turning on SQL comments in hibernate 3.2.6.ga. However, I found that our database (informix 7.31) did not support SQL where the comment was at the start of the comment. Instead, the comment needed to be after the SQL. For example: /* not accepted by informix 7.31*/ select * from systables; select * from systables /* accepted by informix 7.31*/ Because of this, I have added a method to the Dialect for adding comments: /** * Add a comment to the SQL string. * * @param sql StringBuffer holding the SQL. * @param comment Comment to add to the SQL. May be null. */ public void addCommentToSql(StringBuffer sql, String comment) { if (StringHelper.isNotEmpty(comment)) sql.insert(0, "/* " + comment + " */ "); } Thus, the default implementation provides the same functionality as before. However, derived Dialects may override this method to add the comment in a different location. It is also possible to add additional comments in the derived Dialect. In our case, we also add the Java thread ID. I have included a complete patch for this change for hibernate 3.2.6.GA. Please consider its inclusion in Hibernate. Thanks, Daniel.

Hibernate Search Spellchecker

Sorry it took me so long to get this out to the list but I was caught up in Sanne's remarks on my chapters in the book. Thanks Sanne :>) Emmanuel and I haggled this out and here is a first pass. The annotation that specifies a field to add to a dictionary will be at field level for now. @AddToDictionary(name="main_dictionary") @Field public String description; will add content from description will go in indexBase/Dictionaries (by default) and the fields will be main_dictionary_dictionarytechnicalfield1 etc. Additional decisions are the same as stated in HS-269. I have to trust Emmanuel on the field names as I haven't had the time to look at the source. We're going to borrow from the Lucene contribution code that already provides most of the functionality. There were other things we discussed like custom bridges to allow users to put whatever they want to put into the dictionary but that a later iteration. We'd like to get an initial pass into the code. Thoughts, suggestions anyone? John G.

Hibernate web search

Hello, one feature I find missing from Hibernate Search is a possibility to easily implement a web search. A good example is a blog app, where you can search contents of posts. A post is a simple entity with a "body" field, which is indexed by Hibernate Search/Lucene. You then have the normal search box, where the user enters his/hers query. And now is the problem: what do to with this query? Solution 1. Pass it unchanged to the query parser, as is done for example in the blog example in Seam. But that will in many cases generate exceptions. For example - when there is an unclosed " or a :. You can of course catch that exception and return to the user an empty result list - but that's not what the user excepts. Solution 2. Escape any special characters (using QueryParser.escape) and then pass it safely to query parser - but then the semantics of all special constructs (like phrases: "...", including/excluding words: +/-, fuzzy searches: ~ etc) stop to work. That is also not what the user expects. My proposed solution. The best way out, in my opinion, is to create a custom query pre- parser. This parser would be very "forgiving" in case of any syntax errors. I think it would be best to support the query syntax that google uses (that's what the users are accustomed to): * standard boolean operators AND, OR * quotes "..." * fuzzy/synonym search ~ (but in front of the word, not in the end) * word inclusion/exclusion: +/- Some Lucene constructs would be disabled, like boosting (^), field- search (field_name:), *, ?. Any special characters in invalid positions would be escaped, for example an unmatched quote or a + without a word following it. The parser wouldn't be only a syntax-repairer, but also perform other operations, like moving the ~ from the beginning of a word to the end, or (maybe) adding a * to the end of each term. The implementation shouldn't be too complicated using either ANTLR/ JavaCC or simply regular expressions and a string builder. Needless to say, this would also be useful in Seam :). Mutable natural key caching?

I've been looking to optimize the caching of an application which uses a mutable natural key, an account phone number. Hibernate does not yet support optimized caching of @NaturalId(mutable=false), because of how the current natural ID relies on immutable IDs. The caching associates a QueryKey -> results and it's impossible to evict the QueryKey since the natural keys are embedded in it. One solution I considered was to create an association between a set of natural ID values and "QueryKey". When a query is made with mutable natural keys, an association would be made. This could be done within "StandardQueryCache." And then when an entity is updated or removed, if there are mutable natural keys, Hibernate could locate the query and remove it as well. I'm not sure how I could implement this part. I'm guessing I'd have to add a method to QueryCache to do the removal. public interface QueryCache { ... public void remove(NaturalIdAssocation nia) throws HibernateException; } public class NaturalIdAssociation implements Serializeable { Type type; Set<Object> keys; } Actually, thinking this over, having this removal operation would fix some other issues when non-mutable natural id entities are removed. For instance, HHH-3478, a problem found using EntityManager and natural IDs. Thoughts?

I understand the issues about maintainance and testing, and it is quite natural that you would like to be going to put those codes that you could not completely take care of aside from the core code. I think I could go for option 3 as you suggested (perhaps shipping via a download site), and it would be great enough if users could see the link to the site on hibernate.org. So I or someone else in my organization will let you know the URL of the download site when we have successfully made it ready. (It might not be very soon, though.) I will discuss with HiRDB team on it. Thank you again for taking your precious time to look into my proposal and give me suggestions. Hibernate Core 3.3 / HEM/HAN 3.4.0 migration hooplas

Matt Raible has some interesting feedbacks on the migration. http://raibledesigns.com/rd/entry/upgrading_hibernate_to_3_4 There does not seem to be a readme file in the dist anymore. It probably would be nice to tell people to use the JBoss Maven repo and some words about the distro structure. The documentation on the website still is for Hibernate 3.2.2 (http://www.hibernate.org/5.html ) http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/EJB-382 is pretty bad, we should release a 3.4.1 somewhat soon (as in before AS 5 GA). Not sure where his javassist to cglib migration problem come from, I could not even find the documentation he refers to so he was better than me :) Lost of people are bitten by the slf4j implementation drop issue: unless you drop an slf4j impl, you get nasty CNFE. Hi, my name is Tomoto at Software Division in Hitachi. I have posted a dialect for HiRDB (Hitachi's RDBMS, see *1) to JIRA. http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/HHH-3465 I would appreciate it if someone in the team could take a look at it for evaluation, and I would be happy to solve the issues you saw if any. I really wish this dialect to be incorporated into Hibernate so that our customers could easily use Hibernate on HiRDB. This dialect comes with a feature to allow the user to declare the parameter types of user-defined functions in the properies file. It was necessary because HiRDB required ? parameters to be qualified by 'as <type>' in user-defined function invocations.
