How many app servers support jdk 1.6 at this point?
As for the drivers, i believe most have jdbc 4 drivers available. The
bigger question is how many really support the jdbc 4 features as
opposed to implement the methods and do nothing or throw
unsupportedoperationexception? Back when Gail and I first started
looking at this quite a few fell into this latter category.

I guess the question is from the people that can't go for JDK 6 / JDBC
4, how many are willing to move to the next version of Hibernate anyway.
If it's a small minority, we should move on. If not then we need to
hack around :(
