WRT performance testing... well I think we can agree that the performance
would not be worse. So I don't see the harm in that regard.

Right that's what I'm referring to. I don't know if someone will have
time to properly implement it all (as changes would need to be
performance tested and that's going to take time), so I would aim to
at very least check that this won't need API changes later.
